I am with the Chair of Computer Networks at the TU Dresden, leading the Energy Lab. The lab is a member of the Cluster of Excellence: Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden. My research activities are related to (1) energy efficient computing, (2) wireless networks, and (3) ubiquitous computing. With regard to energy-efficient computing, my main focus is on the energy consumption of large-scale servers and data centres. Specifically, I investigate the scope and usefulness of various probabilistic models to classify services (applications); to estimate the resource utilization and the power consumption of different types of workloads; and to estimate the cost of different types of adaptation strategies, such as the cost of live migration of virtual machines and dynamic voltage and frequency scaling. With regard to wireless networks, I am interested in developing self-managing, adaptive, and resource efficient protocols for wireless and ad-hoc networks, particularly, for wireless sensor networks. Stochastic processes are the foundation of all of my research activities. In addition to employing them in the context of large-scale servers and data centres, I investigate the statistical properties of sensed data, extracted from sensor deployed in various objects (persons, places, and devices), and strive to identify efficient and reliable mechanisms to meaningfully interpret them.
